CRIME, VICTIMISATION AND VIOLENCE
The technique of anamorphosis has historically been used to hide forbidden images by abstracting them beyond recognition, only allowing their true form to be seen with the introduction of a cylindrical mirrored surface. Crime, Vicitimisation and Violence uses this technique as a visual metaphor for the concealed feminist judgments held within each case re-examined in the Scottish Feminist Judgments Project. Rather than a traditional, idealised depiction, the artist is pictured as Lady Justice in testament to the ‘ordinary person’. This is designed to encourage the viewer to think about the hidden human cost of problematic legislation, largely borne by women. This piece, the first of three produced for the Scottish Feminist Judgments Project, was shown at the Scottish Parliament in an exhibition sponsored by Gail Ross MSP in September 2018.
