Fellow Wage Slaves was an interactive workshop based on the Matchgirl’s Strike of 1888. The projects title was taken from an article written on the strike by Socialist activist Annie Besant.
Hillcroft College operates from a house that was built by Frederick Bryant of the Bryant & May match company, using profits from the labour of the exploited women he employed in his factory. In 1888 these women went on to form the first female -led industrial strike of its kind in the UK.
Participants on this project were invited to consider the irony that a house built on the backs of disadvantaged women is now a home for the educational and social advancement of disadvantaged women. Using the building as inspiration and thinking about ideas of ‘a woman’s place’, both then and now, inspired a varied collection of outcomes.
